One-Person Outrigger Canoes
Kamanu Composites' current line up consists of John Puakea's Kaimana and Kainalu canoe designs. John has over 20 years of experience building and designing outrigger canoes. All of our canoes are custom made in Hawai'i.

The Kainalu is John Puakea's latest design. It is an evolutionary design of the Kaimana with a bias towards Hawai'i conditions. The initial concept was to modify the Kaimana to perform better in rougher conditions, but the end result is a design all of it's own. The Kainalu has a slight reduction in volume, a more pronounced rocker and a forward adjusted cockpit, all of which combine to give the canoe more maneuverability and control in the surf. The Kainalu retains the successful plumb bow design of the Kaimana that provides reserve buoyancy in the nose to keep it from burying in rough conditions.
Kaimana OC1
- Length Over All: 20' 10"
- Beam Over All: 14.5"
- Hull Weight: 23 lbs*
- Ama Weight: 4 lbs
- Aluminum Iakos
- Custom Foam Seat
- Rear Bungee Storage
- Low Drag Swept (weed) Rudder
The Kaimana is an excellent performer in smaller ocean conditions. It is one of the first canoes with a plumb bow, giving it an extended water line and more reserve buoyancy in the front of the canoe. This provides a smooth glide in the flats and prevents the nose from getting buried when the surf does pick up. It's the perfect boat for most mainland locations.
